Rochester Institute of Technology
RIT was founded in 1829 as the Rochester Athenaeum, which created a tradition of public lectures, book reviews and debates. The institution later merged its periodicals with the existing Mechanics Literary Association to create the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute. In 1944, the institute changed its name to Rochester Institute of Technology. Originally located downtown, RIT was forced to move after eminent domain issues made way for the creation of Rochester’s I-490. In 1968, RIT moved to the town of Henrietta, where it remains today.
