Ride a Rickshaw and Chimps are people too
I now have a part time job working downtown as a rickshaw driver. So, if you need a fun or romantic afternoon activity, why not call me up and get a rickshaw ride?
Also a court in Europe is considering if they should grant status of personhood to a chimpanzee. Let’s be clear, the question is if the chimp is a person, not of he is human. While chimps (both Bonobos, and Pan Trogladites) are very close relatives of humans, we are distict species. Being a “person” is an entirely different matter.
It is difficult to define what makes an individual a “person.” If we use intelligence as the line that divides humans from other animals, then we are forced to includes certain mentally retared individuals along with other non-persons.
If we expand our definitions of personhood to include Pan Trogladites, then how do we deal with our new Person brothers? Do human rights extend to non-human persons? How would we deal with crime committed by chimps, especially if it is crime against another chimp? Are we then obligated to provide education, food, and a higher standard of living for chimpanzees?
